This watercolor is from my 'Italian' Sketchbook, a small, handmade, leather-bound pocket sketchbook I always bring to record my trips and memories of Italy. San Gimignano is known as the Town of Fine Towers due to its unique medieval architecture, which includes the preservation of 'tower' houses, such as the Becci Tower near the town's central square. The towers were built in the Middle Ages as a sign of power and economic prosperity - medieval versions of modern skyscapers! The town's hilltop location and surrounding walls create a stunning skyline that is truly unforgettable.
