Ravenna is famous for its colorful mosaics that date back to the Roman Empire. This busy sunlit street (full of tourists when I made a sketch) leads to the entrance of the famous sixth-century Byzantine church, Basilica di San Vitale. When I came to create this painting I decided to make it a quiet and peaceful scene and omitted all except a figure seated under an umbrella gazing at two dogs strolling towards him from across the street.
